West Finland Higher Education Institutions Network (West Finland HEInet) organized an event at the University of Tampere on the 11th of April. The event was a joint effort between Satakunta University of Applied Sciences (SAMK), Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences (SeAMK), Tampere University of Technology (TUT), University of Tampere (UTA) and Tampere University of Applied Sciences (TAMK). The event is an orientation day for students of the aforementioned institutions who are planning to leave for an exchange period or practical training abroad. The orientation day is held annually to provide students with valuable information regarding their time abroad.
Various speakers attended the event from for example the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland and the student health care of Tampere. A lecturer from the University of Tampere also enlightened the students about learning other cultures and giving insight into culture shocks for example.
“Experiencing culture shock is a good thing. If you don’t experience it, it means you haven’t seen the new culture enough”
-Nancy Aalto, University of Tampere
In the afternoon the attending students had the opportunity to converse with fellow veteran students who had been on an exchange period abroad earlier. This was without a doubt the highlight of the event as the outgoing students were able to get first-hand information regarding their country of choice from the veterans.
The event was a great success and the feedback received from the participants was highly positive. The organizing parties look forward to the next year’s event!
